Overview

I created a 4-8 second animated bumper for Catalyst, a prime-time science series on Arizona PBS developed by ASU students. The project involved designing dynamic motion graphics that capture viewer attention, communicate the series' mission of showcasing groundbreaking Arizona research, and position Catalyst alongside high-production science shows like "Nova" while adhering to strict brand guidelines and time constraints.

The Challenge

Creating an effective TV bumper within broadcast constraints presented multiple design challenges:

Message Compression

Communicate Catalyst's mission in just 4-8 seconds while capturing viewer attention and building anticipation for the series. Every frame needed to count.

Brand Constraint Navigation

Work within an established brand library (simplified geometric icons, navy/teal/orange palette) while creating broadcast-quality depth and credibility.

Audience Engagement

Inspire diverse viewers (ages 18-55) including students, educators, and researchers to watch the series through dynamic visuals and compelling storytelling in limited time.

Design Approach

My approach focused on translating Catalyst's brand mission into dynamic motion graphics while strategically elevating the visual system. I started by researching what makes TV bumpers effective and studying successful science shows like Nova. Then I analyzed the brand library I had to work with: simplified geometric icons in a navy/teal/orange palette. While the palette was strong, the simplified icons felt too casual for a serious science show. So I made a strategic decision: incorporate high-quality realistic imagery of clouds, plants, and natural elements alongside the geometric icons. This approach honored the brand guidelines while adding the credibility and professionalism that science content requires. I explored multiple storyboard concepts that blended geometric motion with realistic imagery, then refined each one through iterative animation. Throughout the process, I stayed focused on whether each motion served both the brand message and elevated the visual perception of the content.

Research & Discovery

To create an effective broadcast bumper, I researched successful TV design patterns and analyzed how science shows capture attention and build credibility with viewers.

Design Process

Creative Brief & Strategy

I developed a strategic creative brief that established clear objectives: position Catalyst as Arizona's premier science education series. The brief defined the target audience (Arizona residents, students, educators, ages 18-55), established the brand promise ("Groundbreaking science is happening right in our backyards"), and clarified the design objective: create a 4-8 second bumper that feels professional and worthy of viewer attention.

Storyboard Development

I created a storyboard that uses dynamic visuals to tell a compelling mini-story within seconds. Informed by research into effective broadcast design, the storyboard establishes a clear narrative arc: opening with attention-capturing imagery, building momentum through animation, and closing with brand affirmation. Each panel reflects Catalyst's color palette and typography while emphasizing themes of scientific discovery and innovation. The storyboard served as the blueprint for animation production.

Animation & Keyframe Refinement

I developed keyframes showcasing animation techniques that guide the visual narrative. The keyframes demonstrate application of animation principles: staging to direct viewer attention, exaggeration to add energy, and secondary action to enhance polish and sophistication. Each frame contributes to a cohesive visual experience that feels intentional and broadcast-ready. I refined the animation through iterative feedback, incorporating peer suggestions to strengthen the motion and pacing.

Design Solutions

Animated Bumper with Brand Integration

I created a 4-8 second bumper that tells a visual story of growth and innovation. It opens with clouds floating across a rainy sky, zooms in to reveal real cloud photography, then transitions to a raindrop falling as the Catalyst logo enters. The bumper concludes with plants growing, their geometric icons filled with real plant photography. Throughout, I layered authentic natural imagery inside the brand's geometric icons, elevating the simplified brand library and creating the professional, credible tone that broadcast science shows expect. The final video shows how the bumper integrates into the actual Catalyst commercial.

Key Takeaways

What I learned: Working within tight constraints actually made me a better designer. I only had 4-8 seconds and a really simplified brand library, which seemed limiting to me. But it actually pushed me to be more intentional because every animation had to serve a purpose and contribute to the story.

Biggest lesson: The biggest lesson from this project is realizing that good user experience also matters in motion graphics. The principles are the same whether you're designing a website or a 4-second bumper. It's the same fundamental approach: understanding your audience and creating experiences that are easy to understand. I’ve really come to appreciate how intentional and strategic UX design requires everyone to be - it works so well I even apply design thinking to my personal life.
